Kappalady village stroll

Kalpitya, Srilanka

If you want to feel like a local and to imagine life as a villager in Kappalady hop into a local tuktuk or into a bullock cart and you are ready to experience everything this place has to offer. The village tour starts with the “Vidyalaya” (which means school in several languages of the Indian subcontinent) The schools is brimming which children eager to test their English skills with the occasionally passing foreigners. People of the Kappalady village place high importance to having their children educated (girls and boys equally). They often lack quality English teachers and consider this as their biggest need. The committees make sure that the school facilities are maintained to the highest standards.

After the school visit, you need to make your way through the narrow dust roads of Kappalady, and you will spot various mosques and masjids scattered around between the brightly colored houses and palm trees. The oldest of them all dates back to 300 years old and is perched on the sands of the beach. The mosque is beautiful and peaceful with only the sounds of the waves from the Indian Ocean behind it and occasional motorcycles passing by. A moment in the shade here will definitely have you relaxed and transported away from your thoughts or worries.

The next stop is the lush and spacious St Annes Church. This is the third largest church in Sri Lanka. In this part of the world, you can spot shrines for Jesus and the saints just as you can spot shrines for Hindu gods. The gardens around the Church are well maintained and with various colorful flowers and shades of green to sooth the senses. Sri Lankan tourists are a common sight here, with many families enjoying picnics under the shades of the huge trees.

After a hot day at the beach or a tough day of kiteboarding lessons, the only shack on the beach that offers you a cool coconut juice is Irfan’s shack. He jointly manages this with his son Sameer who is just a young boy. Irfan brother is the manager of kite garden; a luxury resort situated just a few 100 mts away from Wind Blend Kites. As sun set nears, the village fishermen take out their boats to fish in the lagoon. No kiteboarding is allowed post 5 pm as an understanding with the locals. If walk along the beach during this peaceful hour, you will often see local families enjoying the sunset. The sound of the waves, families chatting and the fishermen working sums up everything you feel about this little sleepy village.
